Uses of Pravastatin (Pravachol)
Pravastatin is the generic form of the brand-name medication Pravachol. Alongside a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and regular exercise, it is used to treat high cholesterol and lower the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Typically, you take it once in the evening, either after dinner or at bedtime. Common side effects include nausea, stomach upset, and headaches. Rare but serious side effects include muscle and liver damage. Contact your doctor right away if you experience severe muscle pain, cramps, and/or extreme fatigue while taking pravastatin. Alcohol can increase the risk of these serious side effects. Make sure to also inform your doctor of all other medications (including over-the-counter drugs and supplements) you are taking in order to prevent drug interactions.
